This discussion guide is a companion document to be used by the person responsible for conducting the training of juvenile detention staff under the curriculum of the Detention Staff Development Series.
Abstract
Each of the six parts of this guide provide information and teaching guidelines for the instructor pertinent to the six training segments. The training segment on counseling techniques focuses on techniques for reducing violence as well as guidelines for identifying and preventing suicide. The information included in this program is useful for changing attitudes, improving feelings, reducing risks, and modifying behavior in any residential program that serves troubled youth. The guidelines for the second training segment, substance abuse, suggest how to identify and treat confined youth who have abused drugs. The third training segment focuses on the legal rights of institutionalized youth, which are embodied in Federal laws and standards designed to protect the physical and emotional safety of confined juveniles. The training focuses on some of the major issues that give rise to liability. The fourth training segment pertains to juvenile detention and intake interviews. This segment identifies criteria for secure and nonsecure placement, along with guidelines for conducting detention and intake interviews. The remaining training segments provide instructor material and guidelines for instruction in the use of passive physical restraints and the custody/treatment dichotomy. 85 selected annotated readings
