A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE ON DETERRENCE, INCLUDING A GENERAL OVERVIEW OF THE DETERRENCE ISSUE, A REVIEW OF SEVERAL EMPIRICAL STUDIES OF GENERAL DETERRENCE AND A DISCUSSION OF STUDIES ON SPECIAL DETERRENCE.
Abstract
IN REVIEWING THE ISSUES OF DETERRENCE, SUCH TOPICS AS THE TYPES OF DETERRENCE, ETHICAL AND ECONOMIC ASPECTS OF DETERRENCE, THE LIMITS OF DETERRENCE, AND THE VARIABLES RELATED TO THE EFFECTIVENESS OF DETERRENCE ARE EXAMINED. A NUMBER OF STUDIES ON DETERRENT EFFECTS OF PUNISHMENT ARE EXPLORED IN THE SECOND SECTION OF THIS ARTICLE. THE AUTHOR REVIEWS RESEARCH EFFORTS ON SUCH AREAS AS THE EFFECTS OF CAPITAL PUNISHMENT, THE EFFECT OF PUNISHMENT ON THE INCIDENCE OF SPECIFIC OFFENSES, THE EFFECT OF DETERRENT ACTIVITIES BY LAW ENFORCEMENT, AND PHYSICAL CRIME DETERRENCE. RESEARCH ON THE RELATIONSHIP OF CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR TO THE PERCEPION OF PUNISHMENT RISK IS ALSO DISCUSSED. IN THE FINAL SECTION, THE AUTHOR COMMENTS ON RECIDIVISM LITERATURE, ANALYZING SUCH ISSUES AS THE FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH RECONVICTIONS, THE RELATIVE EFFECTIVENESS OF VARIOUS TYPES OF PUNISHMENT, AND THE IMPACT OF SENTENCE LENGTH ON RECIDIVISM....DMC
