The Tucson Police Department's Supervisory Training Program is outlined to provide step-by-step guidelines to developing a new field training officer program for supervisors.
Abstract
Several steps are involved in developing a new field training program for supervisors. The first step is to complete a job task analysis to determine the skills required for the position of supervisor. Subsequent steps include the formulation of minimum evaluation standards or benchmarks of success, creation of a progressive and detailed training plan that moves the employee from the least difficult to the most complex tasks of his or her position, and appointment of a training mentor who is the direct and immediate supervisor of the trainee and who provides immediate feedback that is as positive as possible. A training and evaluation component is the final step. These guidelines include several sample forms used by the Tucson Police Department's Supervisory Training Program.
