THE LAWYER-IN-THE-CLASSROOM/LAW DAY PROGRAM IN LOS ANGELES COUNTY, WHICH ACQUAINTS HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH THE WORKINGS OF THE AMERICAN LEGAL SYSTEM, IS DESCRIBED IN THIS ARTICLE.
Abstract
THE PROGRAM HAS THREE COMPONENTS. THE LAWYERS IN THE CLASSROOM COMPONENT FEATURES 500 VOLUNTEER LAWYERS WHO ARE AVAILABLE FOR VISITS TO SOCIAL STUDIES, GOVERNMENT, OR LAW CLASSES TO TALK WITH STUDENTS ABOUT SPECIALIZED AREAS OF LAW. A NEWER COMPONENT, THE HOTLINE LAWYER, WAS ADDED IN 1975. THE HOTLINE LAWYER MATCHES ONE LAWYER WITH ONE CLASS FOR THE ENTIRE SCHOOL YEAR. THESE LAWYERS CONTRIBUTE MOST OF THEIR PROGRAM TIME OVER THE TELEPHONE ANSWERING LEGAL QUESTIONS OR CLARIFYING ISSUES AS THEY ARISE IN CLASS. THE THIRD COMPONENT, LAW DAY, IS CELEBRATED WITH A COUNTY-WIDE COMMUNITY CONFERENCE WHICH BRINGS TOGETHER TEACHERS, SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS, POLICE, LAWYERS, PARENTS, AND STUDENTS IN SMALL GROUP WORKSHOPS ARRANGED AROUND SPECIFIC LAW-RELATED ISSUES.
