The Kentucky Department of Social Services (DSS) and Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) began a collaborative training effort in 1983 that has since evolved into a multifaceted training center.
Abstract
The cooperative venture initially involved a limited number of training sessions developed by the EKU correctional services faculty in various DSS residential facilities for adjudicated delinquents. Since then, activities have expanded to include a training resource center offering over 100 training events annually for over 5,000 participants. Contracted services include food, lodging, audiovisual equipment, instructional media and curriculum development, job task analysis, coordination of regional training, and maintenance of training records. Communications and planning processes involved in this collaborative effort included exploratory outreach, the demonstration of reciprocity, joint capability testing, the establishment of accountability, and mutual commitment. The symbiotic relationship that developed between the two organizations has profited both academicians and practitioners and led to the development of further cooperative efforts. 1 figure, 2 tables, and 7 references.
