This study uses correlation and stepwise multiple regression analyses to explore the relationship between economic development (as a global concept measured by 12 indicators) and crime (rates of homicide and property crime and total incidence of crime) in 59 countries representing the developed and underdeveloped countries.
Abstract
In contrast to previous studies concluding that total crime and property crime are directly related to a nation's developmental status, this study indicates that the different components of development have differing relationships with different types of crime. Depending on the indicators of development, researchers may find positive or negative relationships between development and crime rates at cross-national levels. A more refined study is needed that will use better indicators of delinquency and will include some socialist countries. Notes, data tables, and about 30 references are included.
