This report details the development process of a model behavioral-based performance appraisal instrument and feedback system designed for use in evaluating the performance of correction officers in direct-inmate supervision detention facilities.
Abstract
Seven critical dimensions of correction officer job performance in direct supervision detention facilities were developed through the behavioral-based job analysis: managing the living unit to assure a safe and humane environment; handling inmate discipline; responding to inmate requests; building positive rapport and personal credibility with inmates; supervising in a clear, well-organized, and attention-getting manner; resolving inmate problems and conflicts; and maintaining effective administrative and staff relations. A 3-phase training program was provided prior to implementation of the new appraisal system. A supplemental job analysis is recommended to ensure that all critical elements of the correction officer job have been identified. 2 notes and 5 references
