A specialty training curriculum for domestic violence intervention has been developed in Colorado that incorporates an entry-level domestic violence counseling certificate training program.
Abstract
Designed for a university's continuing education program, the curriculum is designed to meet statewide training requirements for domestic violence perpetrator intervention providers. The curriculum includes domestic violence intervention workshops that deal with such areas as perpetrator issues, victim issues, and effects of violence on children. Experiential practicum-internship requirements include direct client contact for 800 hours that are accrued through individual, group, couples, and family counseling. Additional requirements involve 200 client hours working in a certified domestic violence intervention program with court-ordered clients. Courses can be added to the traditional university curriculum that deal with domestic violence dynamics, addictive behaviors, clinical interviewing and assessment, and resistive clients. The authors recommend course offerings that address perpetrator, victim, and child witness and victim counseling issues be improved as domestic violence intervention research continues. 21 references and 1 table
