Abstract
BY FOCUSING UPON THE INSTITUTIONAL PHASE OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, IT TRACES SOME OF THE EVOLUTION OF ATTITUDES AND PROCEDURES WHICH FORM TODAY'S CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM. THE EMPLOYMENT OF EXILE, TORTURE, MUTILATION, TRANSPORTATION AND EXECUTION AS OLDER FORMS OF PUNISHMENT; THE RISE OF PENITENTIARIES IN AMERICAN AND EUROPEAN SCHEMES OF CORRECTIONAL REFORM; THE RIGID PRACTICES OF YESTERDAY AND TODAY-- ALL OF THESE REALITIES ARE GIVEN REPRESENTATION IN THIS SERIES. THE TRAINING OFFICER WHO WISHES TO USE THIS SLIDE SEQUENCE TO BEST ADVANTAGE WILL WANT TO APPEND A NUMBER OF SLIDES RELATING TO HIS IMMEDIATE STATE SITUATION.
