STUDY CARRIED OUT WITH 530 YOUTHFUL OFFENDERS AT THE FEDERAL CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION AT TALLAHASEE, FLORIDA.
Abstract
THIS STUDY CAN BE DESCRIBED IN FOUR BASIC PHASES. THE FIRST PHASE INCLUDED DRAWING THREE SAMPLES OF ONE HUNDRED PROTOCOLS EACH AND THE SUBSEQUENT STATISTICAL ANALYSIS CONDUCTED ON EACH TO DETERMINE THE NUMBER OF NATURALLY OCCURRING SUBGROUPS WHICH WOULD EMERGE FROM EACH SAMPLE. THE SECOND PHASE WAS CONCERNED WITH MATCHING THE SUBGROUPS FROM EACH SAMPLE WITH ONE ANOTHER, AND WITH WRITING RULES TO DESCRIBE THE LARGER GROUPS WHICH RESULTED FROM THIS MATCHING. THE THIRD PHASE CONSISTED OF DRAWING A NEW SAMPLE OF 89 PROTOCOLS AND CLASSIFYING EACH ACCORDING TO THESE RULES IN ORDER TO DETERMINE WHETHER THESE RULES WERE APPLICABLE TO INDIVIDUAL, AS WELL AS GROUP, PROFILES. THE FOURTH PHASE ENTAILED STUDYING THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE GROUPS WHICH EVOLVED THROUGH THIS STUDY AND FURTHER COMBINING THEM INTO BROADER TYPES WHICH COULD SERVE AS THE BASIS FOR FURTHER RESEARCH IN THIS AREA.
