EXECUTIVE SUMMARY OF A PROJECT TO DEVELOP AN IMPROVED CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM CAPABLE OF SCREENING OFFENDERS FOR PLACEMENT IN TREATMENT PROGRAMS.
Abstract
THE PROJECT HAD AS ONE OF ITS GOALS THE IDENTIFICATION OF CLASSIFICATION SYSTEMS AND TREATMENT PROGRAMS BEING USED IN 1974 AND THE ANALYSIS OF RELATED QUANTITATIVE STUDIES OF THE APPLICATION OF THESE SYSTEMS. ANOTHER PROJECT GOAL INVOLVED THE DOCUMENTATION IN DETAIL OF CLASSIFICATION TESTS AND TEST PARAMETERS USEFUL IN TESTING OFFENDERS. THE TEST CHARACTERISTICS, PREDICTIVE POWERS, AND SIGNIFICANCE OF THE REFERENCED SAMPLE STUDIES WERE SUBSEQUENTLY USED IN THE DESIGN OF AN OFFENDER CLASSIFICATION MODEL. THE FINAL GOAL OF THE PROJECT WAS TO DESIGN AN IMPROVED CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM WHICH IS INTERDISCIPLINARY AND WHICH RELATES OFFENDER CHARACTERISTICS TO SPECIFIC CRIME CATEGORIES IN ORDER TO IMPROVE THE ABILITY TO PREDICT RELATIVE SUCCESS THROUGH THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM CONTINUUM FROM ARREST THROUGH PAROLE.
