The efforts of the Knox County (Tenn.) school system to develop a security and crime prevention survey to assess the levels of crime prevention and security procedures in their schools are described, with emphasis on the partnerships with local law enforcement and the use of community members' expertise in the areas of security and crime prevention.
Abstract
A national survey conducted in 1992 revealed that safety and security concerns are of paramount interest to educators. The Knox County school system established a Safety and Security Task Force. Starting in September 1995, the task force developed a security and crime prevention survey for each school principal to complete. The survey has 43 items to be answered yes, no, or not applicable. Space is provided for additional comments. The survey has five sections: (1) organization, (2) procedural security measures, (3) exterior security, (4) interior security, and (5) intrusion/fire alarms. Corrective measures based on the survey will be implemented after the data are analyzed. Appended survey instrument and 10 references
