This report summarizes the three workgroup sessions and the meeting "wrap-up" of the workshop on "Dialogue on College Drinking" (March 11, 1998), a half-day meeting devoted to fostering increased communication, cooperation, and collaboration among the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) and institutions of higher education, other government agencies, and the private nonprofit sectors that are working to combat the problems of excessive and underage drinking on American college and university campuses.
Abstract
Three concurrent workgroup sessions were structured around issues consistent with the workshop's objectives. Objectives were to identify additional existing activities about which participants were informed; to identify and prioritize unmet needs; to identify opportunities for collaboration among all participants; to identify the specific contributions and roles of CSAP; and to identify others who should be a part of this collaborative effort. This report indicates that the workshop fulfilled its mandate by framing the many issues and strategies related to excessive and underage drinking on the Nation's college and university campuses. It provided an opportunity for policymakers and practitioners to share information on this issue in a interactive forum. The workshop also served as a fact-finding vehicle in initiating a dialog on the ways CSAP can best support and advance efforts that address this issue. Principal unmet needs in addressing drinking among college students were identified in the following areas: prevention funding, research and evaluation, resources at the programmatic level, heightened visibility and awareness, and collaboration. Figures portray participant collaboration opportunities, potential CSAP contributions and roles (technical assistance, research dissemination, interagency and multilevel facilitation and coordination, ensure continuum of care, and social marketing), and suggested participants in future dialogues on college drinking. 6 figures and appended participant list and workshop agenda
