This is the 1998/1999 Directory of Legal Aid and Defender Offices in the United States and Territories.
Abstract
The directory includes more than 1,800 civil legal services offices and more than 1,050 defender offices. It is widely used as a source for client referrals, peer networking and information sharing. Many organizations listed in the directory employ full time staff attorneys who provide legal advice, counsel and representation to poor clients. Others operate as referral services that direct clients to private attorneys willing to undertake client representation on a pro bono or reduced fee basis. Organizations that devote a significant portion of their resources to serving clients within a particular area of the law are listed in the Legal Support Services section. The document includes an overview of the National Legal Aid and Defender Association (NLADA) and its services, NLADA awards, and an individual membership application.
