THE DIRECTORY PROVIDES A GUIDE TO WOMEN'S AND CO-SEX DRUG TREATMENT PROGRAMS FOR EVERY STATE IN THE U.S., AS WELL AS FOR PUERTO RICO AND THE VIRGIN ISLANDS.
Abstract
FOR EACH STATE, THE DIRECTORY LISTS THE STATE AGENCY REPONSIBLE FOR OVERSEEING DRUG AND ALCOHOL TREATMENT AND PREVENTION PROGRAMS, FOLLOWED BY INDIVIDUAL PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS OF EACH AVAILABLE PROGRAM. THE PROGRAM'S ADDRESS AND TELEPHONE NUMBER ARE INCLUDED. UNTIL RECENTLY, TREATMENT PROGRAMS FOR DRUG ABUSERS HAVE NOT TOTALLY CONSIDERED THE PARTICULAR NEEDS FOR WOMEN. CLINICIANS HAVE REPORTED THAT WOMEN ARE 'HARDER TO TREAT.' THIS MAY BE BECAUSE WOMEN BRING A VARIETY OF UNIQUE THERAPEUTIC ISSUES TO THE TREATMENT SETTING, SUCH AS INTERNALIZED AND IMPOSED SEX-ROLE EXPECTATIONS AND A GREATER NEED FOR SUPPORTIVE SERVICES SUCH AS CHILD CARE. HOWEVER, SINCE 1977 SIGNIFICANT STRIDES IN IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF SERVICES TO DRUG-DEPENDENT WOMEN HAVE BEEN MADE. MANY STATES HAVE ESTABLISHED SEPARATE AND DISTINCT WOMEN'S PROGRAMS, WHILE OTHER HAVE ENCOURAGED EXISTING PROGRAMS TO PROVIDE SPECIAL SERVICES TO FEMALE CLIENTS. THE PROGRAMS LISTED REPRESENTED A WIDE VARIETY OF TREATMENT DESIGNS. THE DIRECTORY IS INTENDED TO SERVE PERSONS IN NEED OF TREATMENT, THE PROVIDERS OF SERVICES, AND PROFESSIONALS WHO HAVE THE NEED FOR REFERRAL MECHANISMS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED--PRG)
