ESSAYS AND ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY ON HOMELESSNESS, CHRONIC INEBRIETY, AND RELATED FORMS OF DISAFFILIATION, AND THEIR RELATION TO MOVE GENERAL SOCIAL PROBLEMS AND PROCESSES.
Abstract
SOME OF THE ESSAYS DEAL WITH SKID ROW AND ITS MEN. OTHERS TREAT MORE COMMON FORMS OF DISAFFILIATION SUCH AS WIDOWHOOD OR DEFECTION FROM MEMBERSHIP IN VOLUNATRY ASSOCIATIONS. THE DISCUSSION OF TOPICS BEYOND THE TRADITIONAL BOUNDARIES OF HOMELESSNESS LITERATURE IS AN ATTEMPT TO ENCOURAGE THE EXPLICIT GENERALIZATION OF FINDINGS FROM RESEARCH ON TRANSIENCY AND SKID-ROW LIFE TO OTHER AREAS OF INQUIRY. THE ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY PROVIDES INFORMATION ABOUT THE AUTHOR'S GENERAL THESIS CONCLUSIONS. FOR WORKS REPORTING EMPIRICAL RESEARCH, IT IDENTIFIES THE PROBLEM STUDIED, THE RESEARCH SITE, SAMPLE SIZE, METHODS APPLIED, AND MAJOR FINDINGS. AS A GENERAL RULE UNPUBLISHED STUDIES AND MATERIALS NOT AVAILABLE IN ENGLISH TRANSLATION WERE ANNOTATED IN GREATER DETAIL THAN OTHER WORKS. MOST OF THE STUDIES CITED WERE CONDUCTED IN THE UNITED STATES, BUT THERE IS A SUBSTANTIAL REPRESENTATION OF CANADIAN AND BRITISH STUDIES, AND A CONSCIOUS EFFORT WAS MADE TO INCLUDE MATERIAL FROM AS MANY NATIONAL SETTINGS AS POSSIBLE.
