This dissertation examines the nature and extent of disruption and violence in urban public secondary schools and analyzes models for crisis management as suggested strategies for dealing with school disorders.
Abstract
The analysis is based on structured and unstructured interviews with teachers, school administrators and students; reports of major school disturbances; a literature and media coverage review; and the author's personal experience as a student in an urban high school. The dissertation identifies types of disorderly student behavior and discusses disorders involving forms of dissent and coercive disruption as well as disorders involving violent disruptions and criminal offenses. The suggestions for ameliorating student unrest and violence concern school security and disciplinary strategies as well as administrative and pedagogical reform measures. Tabular data and over 100 references are provided.
