INTENDED AS A RESOURCE FOR JUVENILE COURT JUDGES AND COURT PERSONNEL, THIS TEXT PRESENTS AN OVERVIEW OF CURRENT DISPOSITIONAL THINKING AND THE AVAILABLE ALTERNATIVES FOR VARIOUS TYPES OF JUVENILE OFFENDERS.
Abstract
THE TEXT OPENS WITH A DISCUSSION OF THE GOALS OF THE GOALS OF THE COURT (IN ASSISTING INDIVIDUAL CASES AND MEETING COLLECTIVE NEEDS), THE PROCESSES OR METHODS TO REACH THESE GOALS, AND THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE TWO. AN OVERVIEW OF THE PREVAILING DISPOSITIONAL TRENDS IN USE AS OF 1972-1973 IS PROVIDED. AMONG THESE DISPOSITION TYPES ARE DETENTION, COMMITMENT TO STATE SCHOOLS, HALFWAY HOUSES, INDIVIDUAL PROBATION, GROUP HOMES, RESTITUTION PROGRAMS, DRUG EDUCATION PROGRAMS, AND COUNSELING PROGRAMS. EACH MAJOR TYPE OF JUVENILE CASE IS THEN BRIEFLY DESCRIBED, FOLLOWED BY A LIST OF TYPICAL MAJOR GOALS SOUGHT IN EACH INSTANCE. THE CASE TYPES INCLUDE THE TRAFFIC OFFENDER, THE FIRST OFFENDER, THE REPEAT OFFENDER, AND CHRONIC OFFENDERS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS SUCH AS THE HOME TRUANT, THE SCHOOL-RELATED DELINQUENT, THE DRUG DEPENDENT OFFICER, THE DANGEROUS DELINQUENT, AND THE MENTALLY ILL/MENTALLY DEFECTIVE OFFENDERS. FOR EACH OF THESE CASE TYPES A LIST OF THE GENERAL PROCESSES REQUIRED AND THE SPECIFIC KINDS OF DISPOSITIONAL ALTERNATIVES THAT LEND THEMSELVES TO ATTAINMENT OF THE CASE GOALS IS PROVIDED.
