THE PRIMARY AIM OF THIS PROGRAM IS TO PROVIDE LEGAL COUNSELING, AND IN APPROPRIATE CASES, ACTUAL REPRESENTATION TO CONVICTED INMATES UNDER THE JURISDICTION OF THE DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS.
Abstract
THIS REPORT WAS BASED ON CASES FROM THE PROGRAM'S FIRST NINE WEEKS OF OPERATION. TABLES OF DATA ARE PRESENTED ON CASES OPENED AND CLOSED, CASE ACTIONS, ACTIONS WITHIN EACH CATEGORY (CRIMINAL, CIVIL, ADMINISTRATIVE), CASE REFERRALS, AND LOCATION OF INMATE CLIENTS. ALSO INCLUDED IS THE KEY CODE FOR TYPE AND DISPOSITION OF CASES. THE DATA FROM EACH OF THESE TABLES IS SUMMARIZED AND DISCUSSED. FIGURES INDICATED ALMOST THREE TIMES AS MANY CASES COMING IN AS BEING CLOSED, A HIGHER THAN ANTICIPATED WORK BACKLOG. THE TOTAL NUMBER OF ACTIONS EXCEEDED THE TOTAL NUMBER OF CASES DUE TO THE FACT THAT SOME CLIENTS' CASES DEMANDED MORE THAN ONE LEGAL ACTION ON THEIR BEHALF. ALMOST HALF THE CRIMINAL LAW RELATED ACTIONS WERE FOLLOWED THROUGH TO COMPLETION WITHIN THE PERIOD ITSELF. IN ADDITION, DATA SHOWS THAT REQUESTS FOR A REDUCTION IN SENTENCE AND FOR SETTING ASIDE DETAINERS TOGETHER CONSTITUTE OVER ONE-FOURTH OF ALL REQUESTS RECEIVED.
