Abstract
THE PUBLIC DEFENDER SERVICE REPRESENTS 60 PERCENT OF PERSONS UNABLE TO AFFORD COUNSEL IN CRIMINAL, JUVENILE, AND MENTAL HEALTH COMMITMENT PROCEEDINGS. SHORT SUMMARIES OF ITS VARIOUS PROGRAMS AND STATISTICS ON ITS FIRST YEAR OF OPERATION, AND THE STATUS OF THE APPOINTMENT OF COUNSEL PROGRAM, IN WHICH MEMBERS OF THE BAR IN PRIVATE PRACTICE DEFEND INDIGENT CLIENTS, ARE REPORTED. THE APPENDICES CONTAIN A FINANCIAL STATEMENT FOR THE FISCAL YEAR, STATISTICAL INFORMATION ON PUBLIC DEFENDER CASES, AND COPIES OF VARIOUS COVER SHEETS AND REPORT FORMS WHICH WERE DEVELOPED TO AID IN CASE PROCESSING.
