PROPOSED SYSTEM AT THE WEST GERMAN FEDERAL CRIMINAL POLICE OFFICE FOR USE BY OPERATIONAL, RESEARCH, AND EDUCATIONAL ELEMENTS OF THE POLICE COMMUNITY.
Abstract
THE SYSTEM WILL COLLECT, EVALUATE, AND MAKE AVAILABLE RELEVANT CRIMINAL JUSTICE DOCUMENTS. A COMPUTER WILL STORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE DOCUMENTS, INCLUDING BOTH BIBLIOGRAPHICAL DATA (SUCH AS AUTHOR, TITLE AND PUBLISHER) AND DESCRIPTIVE TERMS WHICH ARE ASSIGNED TO A DOCUMENT ON THE BASIS OF ITS CONTENTS. A MULTIPLE SYSTEM, GOLEM (LARGE MEMORY ORIENTED LIST PROCESSING METHOD) ASSIGNS THESE TERMS USING EITHER THE AUTHOR, SUBJECT AREA SPECIALISTS, OR A PROGRAMMED COMPUTER SEARCH OF THE DOCUMENT ITSELF. TO OBTAIN DOCUMENTS ON A CERTAIN TOPIC, A USER OF THE SYSTEM REQUESTS THEM BY USING DESCRIPTIVE TERMS SELECTED FROM A STANDARDIZED THESAURUS. IN AN OPERATIONAL EXPERIMENT IT WAS OBSERVED THAT UNTRAINED PERSONNEL COULD NOT OPERATE THE COMPUTER TERMINAL EFFICIENTLY WHEN COMPLICATED SEARCH STRATEGIES WERE REQUIRED. THE ARTICLE INCLUDES SAMPLE ILLUSTRATIONS OF THE THESAURUS AND OF COMPUTER PRINTOUT INFORMATION ABOUT A DOCUMENT. EVENTUALLY, THE SYSTEM PLANS TO INCLUDE FOREIGN WORKS AND PERIODICALS ON CRIMINAL JUSTICE TOPICS, BOTH IN GERMAN AND IN FOREIGN LANGUAGES. ALL DOCUMENTS IN THE SYSTEM WILL BE MICROFILMED, AND THE SERVICE IS EXPECTED TO BE OPERATIONAL IN 1976. --IN GERMAN
