This article presents pertinent information on available funding opportunities for police and emergency services agencies and how to successfully file and apply for available funds in the prevention of terrorism and in providing domestic security.
Abstract
The key for police or emergency services agencies in obtaining funding support to prevent terrorism and provide domestic security is to keep abreast of the new developments in the area of Federal grants. Funding support is available, but a successful strategy needs to be employed to gain access to the money. This article suggests conducting as much research as possible and making sure all grant applications are completed properly and submitted on time. It explains that when searching for funding some agencies have a grant specialist who conducts extensive research on the grants available to various police and emergency services agencies. The specialist identifies the grants the department has a chance of winning and the department files the grant application(s). When grant applications are rejected, it is largely due to failure to properly research the “requests for proposals” (RFP) or ignoring the rules established by the government. It is important to know the key players in the State grant process and attend all open meetings regarding the grant. Grants continue to be offered through agencies such as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in order to better secure the Nation from terrorism.
