This report from the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services presents data on domestic homicides reported by State and local police in New York State during 2010.
Abstract
Major findings from this analysis of domestic homicide rates in New York State include the following: in 2010, domestic homicides increased by 10 percent to 144; domestic homicides involving minor child victims increased from 17 in 2009 to 37 in 2010; intimate partner homicides decreased by 19 percent from 2009 levels; 44 percent of adult female homicide victims were killed by an intimate partner, compared to 1.7 percent of adult male homicide victims; in 11 percent of intimate partner homicides, the perpetrator also committed suicide; and knives/cutting/blunt instruments were used in 40 percent of intimate partner homicides, while firearms were used in 32 percent. This report from the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) presents data on domestic homicides reported by State and local police in New York State during 2010. Data for the report were obtained from Supplementary Homicide Reports (SHRs) submitted by State and local law enforcement agencies to DCJS as part of the State's Uniform Crime Reporting program. Information in the SHRs includes case-level information on victim-offender relationship, demographic characteristics of victim and offender, circumstances of the homicide, and the type of weapon used.
