This report provides information on rates of domestic homicide in the State of New York for 2011.
Abstract
Major findings from this report on domestic homicide in New York State include the following: in 2011, domestic homicides increased 17 percent while nondomestic homicides decreased 11 percent; between 2010 and 2011, intimate partner homicides increased from 74 to 89, respectively, while other family homicides increased from 72 to 82; between 2010 and 2011, domestic homicides of minor children decreased in New York City, from 25 to 15, but increased from 13 to 21 in the rest of the State; and statewide, 44 percent of female homicide victims age 16 and older were killed by intimate partners, compared to only 4 percent of male homicide victims age 16 and older. This report was compiled by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) to present a statistical account of domestic homicides reported by State and local law enforcement agencies during 2011. Data for the report were obtained from supplementary homicide reports submitted by law enforcement agencies to the DCJS as part of the State's Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program. The report provides an overview of domestic homicides at the State and regional level, demographics of homicide victims, information on minor child victims, circumstances of domestic homicides, weapons used in domestic homicides, and trends in domestic homicides in the State for the period 2007 through 2011.
