These House of Representatives subcommittee hearings, held in February 1984, focused on terrorist activities in the United States and the efforts of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Department of State to deal with terrorism perpetrated by domestic and foreign groups.
Abstract
Speakers included the director of the FBI, the Director of the Office for Combating Terrorism of the Department of State, a political science professor from Ursinus College in Pennsylvania, and a researcher from the Rand Corporation. The FBI's preventive and reactive efforts were detailed, with emphasis on its working relationship with other Federal and local law enforcement agencies and activities to gather and analyze intelligence concerning terrorist groups. The State Department's role in the Interdepartmental Group on Terrorism (the Federal Government's overall policy group) was explained. Physical security measures and the role of government surveillance were also examined. Written statements present data tables, figures, and photographs. Seven articles on terrorism from the newspaper 'Arizona Republic' are also included.
