Abstract
SENATORS, CONGRESSMEN, GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS, OFFICIALS FROM PRIVATE ASSOCIATIONS AND ORGANIZATIONS WITH AN INTEREST IN HIGHLIGHTING THE SERIOUSNESS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AGAINST WIVES AND CHILDREN TESTIFY. A REPRESENTATIVE OF THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF SOCIAL WORKERS ADVOCATES AN INTEGRATED SYSTEM OF SERVICES TO VICTIMS OF FAMILY VIOLENCE THAT COULD BE OPERATED WITHIN THE NEWLY REORGANIZED ADMINISTRATION ON CHILDREN, YOUTH AND FAMILIES OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. AN EXPANDED ROLE FOR THE PSYCHIATRIST IS SUGGESTED BY A MEMBER OF THE AMERICAN PSYCHIATRIC ASSOCIATION WHO SEES THESE PROFESSIONALS' UNDERSTANDING OF FAMILY DYNAMICS, CHILD DEVELOPMENT, AND PSYCHOPATHOLOGY AS SIGNIFICANT IN WORKING WITH MULTIDISCIPLINARY TEAMS IN THE AREA OF FAMILY VIOLENCE. A REPRESENTATIVE OF THE COALITION OF FAMILY ORGANIZATIONS EXAMINES STATISTICAL DATA ON MARITAL VIOLENCE, PARENT-CHILD VIOLENCE, SIBLING VIOLENCE, AND THE BATTERED ELDERLY PARENT, AND SHE ADVOCATES PROVISION FOR THE SHORT-TERM NEEDS OF BATTERED CHILDREN AND SPOUSES IN SHELTERS AND FOSTER CARE AND GROUP HOMES. NEXT, AN OFFICIAL OF THE NATIONAL LEAGUE OF CITIES DRAWS ATTENTION TO THE ISSUE OF FAMILY VIOLENCE AND THAT ORGANIZATION'S ACTIVITY, AND A STAFF MEMBER OF WOMEN'S ADVOCATES DISCUSSES THE DEVELOPMENT OF A SHELTER PROGRAM FOR BATTERED WIVES AND THEIR CHILDREN IN ST. PAUL, MINN. PRELIMINARY RESULTS ARE PRESENTED FROM AN INVESTIGATION OF MYTHS AND STEREOTYPES ABOUT BATTERED WOMEN CONDUCTED AMONG THE FEMALE CLIENTELE OF THE WOMEN'STRANSITIONAL LIVING CENTER IN ORANGE COUNTY, CALIF., AND A SUPPORTIVE STATEMENT FOR ADDITIONAL DOMESTIC VIOLENCE LEGISLATION, AS A MEANS OF REDUCING THE INCIDENCE OF PHYSICAL DANGER TO POLICE OFFICERS WHO RESPOND TO HOUSEHOLD DISTURBANCE CALLS, IS PRESENTED BY A REPRESENTATIVE OF THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF CHIEFS OF POLICE. REFERENCES AND TABLES ARE PROVIDED.
