This booklet explains the dynamics of abusive relationships between men and women, the services available through domestic violence programs in Michigan, and the laws relating to domestic violence and its victims.
Abstract
The information is intended for use by battered women, service providers, advocates, criminal justice personnel, and others concerned about the problem of abuse of women. The discussion emphasizes that women do not want to be abused, that woman abuse results from a society based on male privilege, and that battering occurs among all socioeconomic and cultural groups. It also explains the reasons that women stay in abusive relationships, the psychological effects of abuse, and the services provided by shelters for battered women and their children. Programs for abusive men and steps that victims and that other individuals and organizations can take are also included. Telephone numbers of domestic violence programs in Michigan and national hotline numbers.
