This training manual intends to assist criminal justice officials in the development, implementation, and maintenance of appropriate, community-based criminal justice responses to domestic violence.
Abstract
The 16 sections each cover a topic crucial to an appropriate criminal justice response to domestic violence. Sections cover definitions, social policy, policies and procedures, characteristics and dynamics of perpetrators and victims/survivors, the cycle of violence, and responses of various criminal justice agencies to domestic violence. Guidance is provided for police, prosecution, courts, probation, survivor/witness services, and perpetrator programs. The manual features five themes that permeate the training. First, it is vital that all criminal justice practitioners have a working knowledge of domestic violence. Second, it is essential to improve the formal and informal administrative procedures that affect the identification, apprehension, and processing of perpetrators of domestic assault. Third, protection and services for witnesses and survivors must be expanded. Fourth, training must be provided for all personnel; and fifth, interagency and community networks must be developed to reduce domestic violence. The manual's focus is to help agencies and jurisdiction integrate and systematize these processes. Each section contains the learning objectives and knowledge pertinent to the topic covered. An audio cassette that accompanies the manual provides information on domestic violence.
