This report provides information on domestic violence in the State of Virginia during the period 2006 through 2010.
Abstract
Major findings from this report on domestic violence in Virginia include the following: during the period 2006 to 2010, the overall number of victims of violent crime increased by 1 percent while the number of victims of domestic violence increased by almost 9 percent; domestic violence victims accounted for 1 out of every 5 victims of homicide, 3 out of every 10 victims of sexual assault, and half of all simple assault victims; 70 percent of victims of domestic violence were female and the number of male victims of domestic violence increased by 17 percent during the study period; persons over the age of 65 were overrepresented as victims of domestic homicide and robbery; offenders were most likely to be White males between the ages of 25 and 34; and between 2006 and 2010, the number of arrests for domestic violent and sexual assault offenses increased by almost 19 percent. This report was prepared by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services Criminal Justice Research Center to provide information to members of the State's Domestic Violence Prevention and Response Advisory Board who were charged with making recommendations for changing the State's laws, policies, and procedures to enhance the State's response to domestic violence at all levels. Data for the report were obtained from the State's Uniform Crime Reporting Incident-Based Reporting Repository System, which is managed by the Virginia Department of State Police.
