Trade show security can be divided into four components: cooperation with exhibitors, preparation for the show, application of appropriate systems, and execution of security measures.
Abstract
Cooperation is necessary in order to strike a balance between the goal of the marketing department and that of the security force--respectively, to encourage visitors to interact with the product, and to discourage thieves. Preparation should include environmental and safety hazard inspection; convention center staff fire drills; and increased manpower during the most vulnerable periods-- exhibitor setup and teardown. Application should include closed circuit television coverage in parking lots and vulnerable areas around the exterior of the building, and alarm and other technologies. Proper execution will help maximize the deterrent effect of the other three components. Exhibitors, for their part, should not rest on an assumption that the protection provided by show organizers is adequate, and should find out from the security department what they can do themselves to protect their products.
