FOLLOWING A 12 PERCENT INCREASE IN REPORTED CRIME IN 1977, THE CITY OF DOVER, N.H., ASKED FOR FUNDING FOR A CRIME PREVENTION POLICE OFFICER. A CRIME DECREASE HAS BEEN REPORTED IN SEVERAL CATEGORIES.
Abstract
DURING THE GRANT PERIOD, JANUARY-DECEMBER, 1978, TWO OFFICERS FROM THE DOVER POLICE DEPARTMENT HELD THE CRIME PREVENTION POSITION. THE WORK OF EACH IS DESCRIBED. THEY STARTED NEIGHBORHOOD CRIME PREVENTION GROUPS, TALKED TO CIVIC GROUPS, AND RAN SECURITY SURVEYS FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES. SEVERAL LAPSES IN BANK PERSONNEL SECURITY TRAINING WERE DISCOVERED AND REMEDIED. A SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL PROJECT AT A HOME FOR RETIRED PERSONS RESULTED IN MUCH GREATER REPORTING OF VANDALISM AND, EVENTUALLY A MARKED DECREASE IN VANDALISM AT THE SITE. BURGLARY REPORTS INCREASED DURING THE FIRST 6 MONTHS AS BUSINESSES AND HOMEOWNERS BECAME MORE AWARE OF THE IMPORTANCE OF MAKING REPORTS, BUT DURING THE LAST 6 MONTHS THEY SHOWED A SHARP DECLINE. REFUNDING IS RECOMMENDED. THE PROJECT BUDGET IS INCLUDED. (GLR)
