This volume explains how to identify drug addicts and alcoholics rapidly; how to avoid relationships, contracts, and friendships with addicts; and how to disentangle a financial or personal relationship if already involved with an addict.
Abstract
The author is a certified financial planner who was involved in a relationship with an addict. The text explains the financial and non-financial reasons why people need to learn to identify addicts and how people can lose large sums of money due to being involved with alcoholics and other drug addicts. It also discusses the reasons why non-addicts must cease to enable addiction and must refuse inappropriate requests from addicts. Further sections detail the behaviors, signs, and symptoms of addiction and the actions that individuals should take when separating their financial life from that of the addicts. Topics include the differences between denial and ignorance; financial abuse family members and people in employment and business relationships, the steps involved in ceasing to enable an addict financially, issues related to predicting a predisposition to addiction, improving drug treatment, and policy issues. The final chapter explains techniques by which the non-addict can achieve serenity and empowerment. Checklists, figures, index, and 99 references
