THIS REPORT OF POLICE MOTORCYCLE TRAINING IN FRANCE COVERS THE TRAINING CENTER, ROAD AND CLASSROOM WORK, EQUIPMENT, AND STUDENT MARKING, AND CONCLUDES THAT THE RIDER TRAINING IS VERY THOROUGH.
Abstract
POLICE MOTORCYCLE TRAINING IS CARRIED OUT AT THE TRAINING SCHOOL AT SENS, AND ALL POLICE PATROL AND TRAFFIC WORK IN FRANCE IS DONE ON SOLO MOTORCYCLES, BY TWO NATIONAL POLICE FORCES. MOTORCYCLE COURSES AT SENS TRAIN THE TWO FORCES FOR 10 TO 14 WEEKS, PROVIDE A 10-WEEK COURSE FOR AFRICAN GOLD COAST POLICE, AND TEACH BEGINNERS' MOTORCYCLING. THE POLICE FORCES PROVIDE ALL TRAINING INSTRUCTORS. SENS PROVIDES DUCATI, HONDA, AND BMW MOTORCYLES FOR TRAINING; COURSES IN DRIVING GIVE 81 TO 107 HOURS RIDING TIME. AFTER AN INITIAL 4 WEEKS OF INTRODUCTORY MOTORCYCLE EXERCISES AND ISSUING EQUIPMENT, STUDENTS RECEIVE A COMBINATION OF ROUGH GROUND AND ROAD RIDING INSTRUCTION TO TEACH BALANCE AND CONTROL OF THE MOTORCYCLE. ALL STUDENTS ARE ROAD TESTED SEVERAL TIMES DURING THE RIDING COURSE. HOWEVER, THREE-FOURTHS OF THE INSTRUCTION COURSE IS DEVOTED TO CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION IN ROAD TRAFFIC LAW, HANDLING ACCIDENTS, ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION, FIRST AID, MECHANICS, TRAFFIC EVENTS DIAGNOSIS, AND OTHER SUBJECTS. A STUDENT FAILING THE ENTIRE COURSE MAY NOT REPEAT IT. ALTHOUGH POLICE MOTORCYCLE INSTRUCTION IN FRANCE IS THOROUGH, THE ACCIDENT RATE REMAINS HIGH AMONG THE MOTORCYCLE POLICE. (PAP)
