This Provider’s Guide outlines the Driving With Care education and treatment program for impaired driving offenders.
Abstract
The Driving With Care education and treatment program utilizes the research literature on the treatment of alcohol and other drug (AOD) problems as well as research in the area of mental health, psychology, assessment, and psychotherapy. This Provider’s Guide presents the protocols for delivering this program to impaired driving offenders, beginning with a review of the 10 core service delivery strategies and assumptions that underlie the Driving With Care program. For example, the Driving With Care program is based on the belief that impaired offender intervention focused on moral responsibility toward others should be based on the cognitive-behavioral (CB) approach for implementing change. Section 1 focuses on historical and theoretical perspectives relevant to the development of the education and treatment program, including the history of Driving While Impaired (DWI) legislation and the nature and scope of the impaired driving problem. This discussion includes an overview of the underlying principles and core focus of the CB approaches to education, treatment, and change. Section 2 presents the key elements and the conceptual framework for the Driving With Care program. Various components of the program are described: therapeutic alliance and motivational enhancement, relapse and recidivism prevention, stages of change, and the integration of the correctional and therapeutic. This section also addresses the assessment and screening of clients and introduces the concept of the Master Assessment Plan (MAP), which is used to develop a client’s individual Treatment Plan (TP). Section 3 provides the two Driving With Care education curriculums and the Driving With Care treatment curriculum. Separate participant’s workbooks have been developed for each protocol and provide detailed content of the lesson theme, skill development exercises, and homework assignments (not provided within the Provider’s Guide).
