This article outlines a new road policing strategy.
Abstract
Great Britain recently instituted a road policing strategy intended to improve road user behavior, reduce road user related crime, and result in safer roads and safer vehicles. Improved road user behavior can be achieved by, among other measures: police enforcement of laws regarding use of a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs; publicity of enforcement action; and education of vulnerable groups. Reduced road user crime can be achieved by identifying and quantifying current levels of relevant crime and intelligence-led prevention and enforcement. Safer roads can be achieved by identifying current and potential collision sites; high-visibility patrolling at collision cluster sites; and notifying the public and other agencies of unsafe road conditions. Safer vehicles can be achieved through stop-checks concerning construction and use regulations and preplanned examinations of vehicles. Strategy objectives will be achieved through targeted enforcement and high-visibility policing; informing policy makers of offenders and vulnerable groups; and making use of technology, influencing research and vehicle design.
