This guide offers Alabama local education agencies a resource of ideas and strategies to identify and assist youth at risk of dropping out of school.
Abstract
The Dropout Prevention Task Force identified 15 problem areas it believes are related to dropping out of school. For each of the problem areas, this guide offers suggestions for intervention and prevention programs and activities. The general approach is to involve schools, parents, communities, social services, health agencies, the juvenile justice system, and the legislature. For each of the programs or activities suggested, the guide recommends a person or agency to be responsible for it. The problem areas for which intervention and prevention activities are suggested include excessive absenteeism and truancy, approaching the end of mandatory schooling, disruptive behavior warranting suspension or expulsion, poor grades due to inappropriate placement, disinterest in school, and students feeling harassed by teachers and the school administration. Other problem areas addressed are poor interpersonal skills and self-concept, substance abuse, and insufficient support services. School re-entry programs are suggested. Charts, graphs, and forms.
