A congressional hearing held in Stuttgart, Germany in November 1978 sought to determine the nature and extent of drug abuse among members of the United States military forces stationed in the Federal Republic of Germany.
Abstract
Speakers included military personnel, Federal drug enforcement officials, and the U.S. ambassador to Germany. They noted the importance of ensuring that military forces are in a continuous state of readiness, presented the results of surveys of drug abuse among military personnel, and explained the efforts being made by military leadership to address the problem. The surveys have shown that marijuana is the illicit drug that is most often used and that most of the drug abuse takes place among troops age 25 and under. Recovering alcoholics and addicts also told about their addiction experiences and recoveries. Data were also presented on results of urinalysis testing and on enforcement efforts. Figures, tables, and written statements.
