IDENTIFIED AND EVALUATES SOME EFFECTIVE COMMUNITY-BASED PROGRAMS DEALING WITH TREATMENT AND REHABILITATION OF DRUG USERS WHO HAVE BECOME INVOLVED WITH THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM.
Abstract
THE FIRST PART OF THIS VOLUME DEALS WITH NINE SUCCESSFUL PROGRAMS SERVING DRUG ABUSERS. THE PRESENTATION TALKS ABOUT WHAT MAKES THESE PROGRAMS SUCCESSFUL AND WITH WHOM THEY ARE SUCCESSFUL. THE PROGRAMS SELECTED ALL HAD DIRECT CONNECTIONS WITH THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, HAD PERSONS AMONG ITS CLIENTELE THAT WERE IDENTIFIED AS DRUG ABUSERS, HAD SERVICES APPROPRIATE TO THE NEEDS OF DRUG ABUSERS, AND HAD BEEN IN EXISTENCE FOR AT LEAST SIX MONTHS. CRITERIA FOR DETERMINING THE SUCCESS OF A PROGRAM INCLUDED THE OBJECTIVE OF CONSTRUCTIVE DRUG-FREE LIVES FOR PARTICIPANTS, THE CLARITY OF OBJECTIVES AND EFFECTIVENESS IN WORKING TOWARD THEM, AND THE QUALITY OF FISCAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE MANAGEMENT, THE CALIBRE OF THE STAFF, AND THE QUALITY OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE PROGRAM AND THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. THE SECOND PART OF THE VOLUME PRESENTS THE ESSENTIALS OF A MODEL DRUG ABUSE PROGRAM.
