Testimony by public officials, criminal justice professionals, and private citizens examines the prevalence of drug abuse in the New England States, efforts to combat it, and proposals for reducing the supply of and demand for illegal drugs.
Abstract
Testimony covers drug abuse issues in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Vermont. The witnesses voice a common concern about the increase in cocaine use in the New England States. Issues discussed include intergovernmental cooperation in drug law enforcement, tougher laws against traffickers, improved police-prosecutorial cooperation, and improved police training. Of particular concern to many witnesses is drug trafficking and drug abuse among junior high and high school students. Related matters discussed by witnesses include cooperation between police and school officials in dealing with students who use drugs and education in the schools which will help prevent drug abuse by students. The involvement of parents in prevention efforts is encouraged. Community-based treatment programs for drug abusers are described and assessed. Prepared statements are provided.
