In its fight against drug abuse and trafficking, the New York City Police Department has implemented a variety of programs in addition to its normal drug enforcement functions.
Abstract
Operation Pressure Point targets entrenched drug trafficking areas through covert buy-and-bust activities and high visibility, uniformed occupation. A special unit has been formed to concentrate on enforcement efforts against the sale and possession of crack. A school-based program combines education and awareness activities for students with arrests of individuals distributing drugs in the vicinity of schools. Other programs include a drug customer car confiscation program, an intensified enforcement effort in city housing projects, and a padlock program focusing on premises deemed to be public nuisances. Other programs, using buy-and-bust undercover operations and confiscations, have been implemented in the Bronx, the Borough of Queens, and Washington Heights. Overall, these programs have resulted in increased seizures and arrests and decreased drug-related activity.
