THE PURPOSES OF THIS INSTITUTE WERE TO MAKE THE MOST CURRENT MEDICAL, SOCIAL, AND LEGAL INFORMATION ON NARCOTICS AVAILABLE TO CALIFORNIA'S JUDGES AND TO IMPROVE THE ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE IN DRUG CASES.
Abstract
IN ORDER TO ALLOW FOR DISCUSSIONS OF APPROPRIATE SENTENCING AND DISPOSITIONAL CRITERIA TO EMPLOY IN YOUTH AND ADULT DRUG CASES AND TO HELP RESOLVE PROCEDURAL PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED IN TRYING AND HEARING SUCH CASES, THE JUDGES AND RESOURCE PERSONNEL ATTENDING THE INSTITUTE WERE EACH ASSIGNED TO A SMALL DISCUSSION GROUP. THE DISCUSSIONS WHICH ARE REPORTED IN THESE PROCEEDINGS TOOK PLACE IN THREE OF THE INSTITUTE'S SIX DISCUSSION GROUPS, ONE CONSISTING OF SUPERIOUR COURT JUDGES ASSIGNED TO HEAR FELONY MATTERS, ANOTHER OF MUNICIPAL COURT JUDGES WHO HEAR MISDEMEANORS, AND THE THIRD CONSISTING OF JUVENILE COURT JUDGES. A TOTAL OF NINE CASE STUDIES ARE DISCUSSED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
