A societal consensus is emerging that reduction of demand through efforts directed at prevention and treatment is the critical element in current efforts to fight against abuse of alcohol and other drugs.
Abstract
Change can occur only through an understanding of the correlates and risk factors associated with the use of alcohol and other drugs and an identification and implementation of sound strategies. Research has uncovered a considerable body of knowledge about the interplay of personal behavior, risk factors, and health in the prevention of substance abuse, but many questions remain. Federal efforts to realize supply and demand reduction and activities and expenditures of State-level agencies are identified. The Board of Trustees of the American Medical Association recommends strategies designed to prevent the national crisis of drug abuse in the United States from becoming a long-term burden and pledges its ongoing involvement in program to alert physicians and the public to the dimensions of the problem and to the most promising solutions. 53 references (Author abstract modified)
