The Federal drug control strategy relies on activities and programs in five major areas: (1) regulation and other enforcement efforts; (2) support for drug control efforts by individual drug-producing and drug-transiting countries; (3) education and other prevention activities; (4) drug treatment and rehabilitation; and (5) research on drugs, drug dependency, and prevention and treatment methods.
Abstract
The nonmedical use of drugs has been a public policy concern for at least a century, and the Federal Government has assumed major responsibility for drug control. The Federal strategy for preventing drug abuse is multifaceted, based on domestic laws that regulate drug trafficking and on international production controls. At the same time, the Federal strategy pursues demand reduction by supporting treatment and prevention programs and by conducting drug research. Policy issues raised by almost every aspect of the overall Federal drug control program are examined. Legislation related to drug control is briefly described, and a legislative chronology is included.
