This report presents the proposed budget for the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1976 and the period ending September 30, 1976, together with the transcript of the 1975 congressional hearing on the budget.
Abstract
The budget request of $150,785,000 represented an increase of $15,785,000 over the amount appropriated to date for the current fiscal year. The request for the transition period was $42 million. The accompanying report noted that the heroin situation is extremely grave and the barbiturate and amphetamine problem is serious and displays some potential for becoming worse. The cocaine situation is also threatening. DEA's single most important program is to respond to continuing production and transshipment of heroin in Mexico. Its other priorities are to respond to the threat of diversion from Turkey, to improve the quality of DEA cases, and continue the development of the national narcotics intelligence system. DEA's two major operating programs are a program to immobilize and deter illicit drug traffickers and a program to shut off diversion from domestic legitimate sources. DEA's intelligence program supports these efforts. Tables
