State, Territorial, and Federal police enforce drug laws in Australia. The National Drug Intelligence Bureau coordinates the enforcement of drug laws in New Zealand.
Abstract
Since 1982, there have been major increases in the seizure of heroin, cannabis, and cocaine made at or near the point of importation. In New Zealand, police have the power of warrantless searches under the 1975 Misuse of of Drugs Act. In Australia, each jurisdiction has drug laws that reflect the requirements of international drug conventions, although precise provisions vary considerably among States and territories. At the operational level, task forces of Federal, State, and sometimes customs officials, coordinate drug enforcement efforts in various jurisdictions. Police are concerned about the link between drug use and crime. Information on drug abuse patterns, drug laws, and drug law enforcement is provided for each Australian State and territory. 9 tables.
