This guidebook was developed to assist schools and communities plan and implement drug-free school zones within a broader school-community prevention and intervention program.
Abstract
The following common elements of drug-free school zones are identified and discussed: geographic focus, public will, government responsiveness, natural leaders, knowledge of municipal services, knowledge of Federal and State drug laws, drug-free zone task forces or advisory groups, partnerships, plans, evaluation, and resources. The rationale for drug-free school zones and drug-free school zone strategies are described. Specific steps involved in planning for drug-free school zones are outlined; checklists are provided to facilitate the accomplishment of these steps, and helpful resources and organizations are listed. Additional information on alcohol and other drug prevention is appended. 44 references and 5 tables
