Addressed to school administrators, teachers, and parents, this videotape notes the prevalence and harmful effects of alcohol and other drug use on children and youth and recommends that schools take a leadership role in addressing drug problems based on a partnership with parents and community organizations.
Abstract
The discussion notes that many parents grew up in a youth culture that consider drug experimentation a part of growing up and that changes in marijuana and the introduction of new drugs like crack cocaine and "ice" are producing severe physical and psychological effects on youth today. In addition, the age of first drug use is now 10-12. Schools need to lead the efforts to combat drug use. A kit of materials funded by a grant from the United States Department of Education is called Drug-free Schools and Children. It provides a framework for developing and implementing policies and also includes a trainer's guide.
