This book is a guide to help prevention specialists develop, improve, evaluate, and fund substance abuse prevention programs for adolescents.
Abstract
The book: (1) reviews normal adolescent behavior and the indicators of disturbance, outlining the forces and conditions that affect substance use; (2) details the components and theoretical bases of effective curriculum and community-based programs, including ways to obtain materials and training in their use and descriptions of programs that were successful in establishing a supportive school climate and positive community attitudes; (3) outlines the personal, family, school, and community factors that help young people function in the presence of major life stressors; (4) describes how to evaluate a drug prevention program and gauge its results; (5) explains how to take advantage of funding opportunities from foundations and public agencies; and (6) provides comprehensive guidance on the grantmaking process and on proposal writing.
