This hearing before the House Select Committee on Narcotics Abuse and Control encompasses statements and testimony by the commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard; associate attorney general and chairman of the Enforcement Coordinating Group, National Drug Policy Board; the Commissioner of Customs; and the ranking minority member of the House Select Committee on Narcotics Abuse and Control regarding various Federal departmental and interagency efforts to interdict drug trafficking and also reduce drug demand.
Abstract
The commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard reports on the Coast Guard's efforts to implement the Anti/Drug Abuse Act of 1986, particularly in the Caribbean Basin. He indicates that surface maritime drug trafficking has been significantly reduced through the Coast Guard's winter operations but that air trafficking continues virtually unabated. The commandant is working with the National Drug Enforcement Policy Board to coordinate interagency efforts to interdict air trafficking. The chairman of the Enforcement Coordinating Group of the National Drug Policy Board testifies on the board's efforts to coordinate drug law enforcement on a broad front. Committee members also queried him about efforts to reduce the demand for drugs. The Commissioner of Customs comments on Operation Alliance on the U.S. Southwest border, which involves a major Federal, State, and local effort to interdict drugs in this region. Prepared statements by the witnesses are provided.
