Questions surrounding drug abuse are profound and, for many legal service programs, direct questions concerning what drug-related cases to accept have only begun to surface recently.
Abstract
Because the problem of substance abuse is having a major impact on such substantive areas of law as health, domestic relations, public benefits, and housing, this compilation of articles reviews legal issues related to drug use that are emerging in these areas. One article emphasizes that eliminating the influence of drugs and drug abuse from public and subsidized housing requires a multifaceted approach that involves improving security, providing treatment and constructive alternatives to drug use, and eviction campaigns. Another article examines a communitywide strategy developed by public housing tenants and the Greenwich Housing Authority in Connecticut to deal with drug sales in public housing. Articles also discuss prenatal exposure and pediatric AIDS as new issues for children's attorneys, effects of crack and cocaine on infants, effective advocacy for parents, prevention and treatment as positive approaches to alcoholism and drug dependency, improving substance abuse treatment for women, AFDC (Aid to Families with Dependent Children) recipients and drugs, drug abuse in low-income communities, and legal services for poor clients. 655 endnotes and 6 tables
